Astrologists now tell us the planets are perfectly aligned for opportunity, growth and the benefit of energies long invested. Interestingly, I do feel this is an unusually exciting year for myself and my work. All the years invested in mastering technique are now woven with the wonder of creativity and the faces of many of you- loyal collectors of my work. I am grateful beyond measure. Thank you for your continued support.
Growing up in Michigan I began my artistic career at an early age, studying with a portrait artist at the age of 13. Then taking every class and workshop available. I found a passion for sculpture and metal arts. I went on to college courses at Kansas University and the Kansas City Art Institute, further developing my design skills. Even during my service in the US Army the Universe took care of me by placing me in a position to teach Arts and Crafts at Fort Riley, KS. Sharing my knowledge and skills is a challenging and rewarding gift I can share with my students. Moving to Southwest Florida in the early 80’s I met and fell in love with my husband Kerry. Again the Universe intercedes ( we were a blind date) by matching me with someone who provided a venue and the essential support to follow my creative dreams. We owned a small Jewelry manufacturing studio supplying jewelry stores from Key West to Texas with nautical jewelry and Jeweler’s tools. During this time I became known for my unique approach to jewelry and continued to expand my skill set through workshops and trade association workshops. Those twenty years went by quickly.
In 2000 BabS began to apply her same commitment to textiles and the ancient art of Japanese Shibori and Mokume dying techniques, Silk screening, dying and hand painting her own fabrics. She then creates beautiful handbags, hats and accessories. I love combining the softness of my hand died silks with leathers, furs, gator, dear, wild boar, python and stingray hides. The contrast is astounding when you insert your hand into one of these handbags and experience the sensual retrieval of your treasures from inside.
